| | Elm Fork Tuesday Night Classes Past Events Tiger
Valley ran two Tuesday night classes in August. Our "CHL Skills
& Tactics" class prepared students for drawing and utilizing their
daily carry firearms in realistic situations. The second class
was "Women's Pistol Overview". We had an outstanding group of
students, many with very little firearms exposure, who developed a
solid foundation with the use of a pistol. Thanks to all who
attended these events!

| Armorer Class Wrapup and Report --by T.J. Pilling Tiger
Valley held its first AR-15 Armorer Course, taught by David Gregor and
Jerry Simmons from Advanced GunWorks of Roanoke, Texas. This was a
great class for me. With being handed by first M-16 over 28 years
ago, it was great to finally take a formal class and confirm some
things that you have been doing.
Unfortunately I am self-taught
on this weapon system, a parts monkey that changed things that didn’t
seem to be working. Through trial and error I would hit it right
most of the time, the other times meant swapping parts and hoping for
the best. I had the advantage of working on the department’s guns
and having tons of spare parts. Unlike myself, David with
Advanced GunWorks has a long pedigree when if come to working on weapon
systems. He has had the opportunity to work for numerous Federal
and Military Units, including the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team and Navy
SEAL Team Six. His experience has allowed him access to inside
information not readily available to the average instructor.
The
class started at 8:00 am and was held at the Garland Police Department
multimedia conference room; yes it was nice with lots of AC and great
video equipment. For an extra $110.00 a tool kit and spare parts
kit was included in the class. For those without extensive tools
this came in handy. A total of ten students opted for the tool
kit, which had just about everything you need to get yourself in
trouble without formal instruction.
On day one we started the
class with the basics of how the weapon system is made. Advanced
GunWorks had some great forgings in different states of
completion. We went into detail on barrel manufacturing
processes, bolts, barrel extensions and internal parts. The
weapons were broken down into their components and examine in
detail. Trigger groups were discussed as well as how they
functioned.
We looked at detail between the differences between
AR-15 parts and M-16. I was set back when I saw the difference
between firing pins, which I didn’t know existed as well as feed ramps
in the M4 variants and other AR-15’s.
The class did lots of
weapons disassembly, with the help of Jerry and Dave when things got
rough in reassembly. The class had a wide range of experience,
some having spent years working on weapons and some were raw recruits
at it.
Day two started with some great interactive video on the
function cycle of the AR-15 and M-16, for those who didn’t have a grasp
of this concept, the video clear thing up. The video allowed the
instructor to zoom into area that were of interest and slow the action
down. We had a long question and answer session where students
were allowed to ask pertinent question about problems that they had
experienced.
Advanced GunWorks showed up with a coffin sized
toolbox with everything and anything you would need or want including
spare parts and select parts that were for sale. Several in the
class opted for ambi-magazine releases and other components as long as
they were tearing the weapons down. At the conclusion of the
class everyone received a certificate from the Garland Police
department for the 16 hours of training. For me the class was
fast paced and informative. If you guys need firearms work done
you need to give the guys at Advanced GunWorks a look, whether it is to
have a part installed or have a complete custom rifle built. They
have customer service that can’t be beat.
The class sold out and
we have a waiting list for the next class. Give us a call or send
an email if you'd like to have a spot in the next AR-15 Armorer Course we offer.
