News from Tiger Valley The competition and training calendar for 2009 is filling up quickly with many great events. Our Team Sniper match is this weekend, the LaRue 3-Gun match is full with 160 participants, and we're working on the final details of our first-ever 4-man Tactical Team event this June.
Our 3-Gun Prep class in March is attracting a lot of students as well as April's Force-on-Force.
We get a lot of questions on our various precision rifle classes,
so are taking the opportunity in this newsletter to answer some of the
more frequently asked ones.
As always, you are welcome to
register for our classes and events either through our online store or
by mailing a check to our office address.
We are making one
change to our popular Wednesday night classes. We will be
providing a certificate of completion to all students who
pre-register. These night classes, unless otherwise noted,
continue to be open to walk-in students. Just keep in mind
walk-ins will not receive a certificate.

Elm Fork Wednesday Night Class On
February 11 our Wednesday night class is "Pistol or Carbine
Tune-Up". Effective shooting is all based on execution of the
fundamentals, so this event is all about tuning up the fundamentals.
The cost is $65, pre-registration is not required, and the event
begins at 6:30 PM at Elm Fork. Bring either a carbine or pistol,
holster or sling, 250 rounds of ammunition, and eye/ear protection.
On
February 25th Tiger Valley will host a speaker on Weapons of Mass
Destruction and include shooting a carbine under WMD conditions. Our
speaker has
extensive training in WMD and has attended training at US Nuclear
testing sites. Learn the reality of nuclear, biological and chemical
threats and want you can and can't do to protect yourself. You will
be getting your information first hand from someone who was on a WMD
response team and knows how to deal with it. The use of a carbine
while wearing a gas mask will be included in the carbine instruction.
The
cost is $65. The event begins
at 6:30 PM at
Elm Fork. Bring your carbine with sling, 100

Precision Rifle Training The
precision rifle classes offered by Tiger Valley are a great
opportunity to learn all about shooting at an outstanding facility with
an excellent instructor. Our next 3-day Precision Rifle Level 1
class begins on February 27th and the next 3-day Level 2 class begins
on April 10th. You can find a basic overview of our Level 1 class
here and our Level 2 class here.
The
Level 1 class is designed for those who without formal training in
precision rifle. Whether you are new to rifle shooting or have
many years as a benchrest shooter or hunter, you will find our class
gives you the skills needed to make accurate hits at long distances.
The course includes some classroom time, however we are big
believers that you learn the art and science of shooting by shooting,
not by keeping a chair warm.
Our facilities for precision rifle
shooting are some of the best in the nation. Tiger Valley offers
a 1000 yard, zero-angle known distance range. This range is
complete with 27 target positions with pit service. Usually only
found at military facilities, the pit service allows each shot to be
marked in the pits and evaluated by the shooter observing the location
of the marker. Shooting without pits either means driving back
and forth to the target or you do without accurate feedback on shot
placement. Our facility also includes a 30 foot tower overlooking
a 1300 yard unknown distance range.
For those of you not familiar with pit service, we have a video of our pit service in action here.
Our
lead instructor, TJ Pilling, spent 23 years with the Garland SWAT team,
served as precision marksman and firearms instructor, and attended
various events including the United States Marine Corps sniper
program. You will be treated in a courteous, professional manner
and will have a fun time while learning about precision rifle. We
typically have about a dozen people in our Level 1 class, with few of
them having previous formal precision rifle experience.
Those interested are welcome to stay on-site at our bunkhouse for $20/night. Simply contact us for bunkhouse reservations.
We
have a number of .308 caliber precision rifles, both bolt-action and
semi-automatic, available to rent for $100 per event. This can
give you an excellent opportunity to try something out before making
the investment.
If you have any questions about course content, logistics, or equipment feel free to email us or give us a call anytime.

Green Eyes & Black Rifles Those
new to the world of the AR-15 face a dizzying array of options in how
to properly select and configure a weapon to best suit their needs.
While there is a great deal of information available on the
Internet, sorting through the the disinformation and debates can be quite a chore. At long last we have a book recommendation for those interested in getting up to speed with carbines.
"Green
Eyes & Black Rifles" is written by Kyle Lamb, who has seen service
from Mogadishu to Mosul with the United States Army Special Forces.
His book contains great information in the various options
available for the AR-15, from barrel length to optics. Lamb is
clear that requirements drive the selection of equipment and that one
size does not fit all.
The
book continues with a good
introduction of how to employ the carbine in the real world.
Beyond the shooting fundamentals, various field-expedient
shooting techniques are presented as are solutions for dealing
with the
realities of combat in an urban environment. While nothing can
replace real-life training, the book is an excellent primer on the
topic.
If you're interested in picking up a copy, there's no better place to order it from than our friends at LaRue Tactical. This also happens to be a place to order some of the best carbines on the planet!
