Elm Fork Wednesday Night Classes
Our
November night classes were both big hits, with our "Low Light Pistol"
and "Combat Pistol" classes attracting a good number of new faces.
For December we have two events scheduled on the 10th at Elm Fork.
The
first event is "Pistol 101". This class is designed for those
with no formal pistol training. The basics of weapon utilization
will be covered at a slow pace in an easygoing environment. This
will be a laid-back and fun introduction to the safe and efficient use
of a handgun. Pre-registration is required and class size is
limited. Student need to provide a pistol, holster, eye and ear
protection, and 150 rounds of ammunition. The cost is $65. The event runs from 6:30 PM to 9 PM.
Also on
December 10th is Tiger Valley's Christmas special, a free Turkey Shoot
(as in no payment required!). The event runs from 6:30 PM to 9 PM
and continual pistol challenges will be conducted. Each challenge
will consist of 10 participants, with everyone putting two dollars in
the pot. The winner of the challenge wins the pot (not a turkey!). This
will be a fun event, with constant opportunities to shoot
and improve your skills. Registration is not required, just
arrive with your pistol, safety gear, holster, and ammunition.
Pistol must be centerfire, .38/9mm or larger, with no single-shot
pistols allowed.

Upcoming One Day Pistol Tune-Up Classes Tiger Valley is offering two special one-day pistol tune up classes in December.
"Pistol
Tune Up - Fundamentals" is designed for students with a reasonable
level of range competency but who have not had extensive formal
firearms instruction. This course will evaluate your current
fundamental pistol skills and provide professional instruction in the
latest pistol techniques and give you ample opportunity to practice
these new skills.
"Pistol Tune Up - Advanced Skills" is for
students with significant exposure to the modern operation of
handguns. Tiger Valley's Level 1 pistol class or an equivalent is
suggested as a pre-requisite for this class. The course will
emphasize advanced skills including multiple target engagements,
shooting on the move, fast reloading techniques, and will be a
fast-paced class.
The time limitations of a one day class
prevent these "Tune Up" classes from being replacements for our 2-day
Level 1 and Level 2 pistol classes, but provide an easily scheduled
one-day opportunity to improve your skills.
Both classes require pre-registration, are $200 with 14-day advance purchase, and will be held at Elm Fork. Pre-register
by simply mailing a check to our office address (listed at the bottom
of this newsletter). Pistol, holster, 3
magazines, and safety gear is required. Bring 500 rounds for the
Fundamentals and 700 rounds for the Advanced class.

Moving Targets
by T.J. Pilling You
have just deployed on your objective, a warehouse on the outskirts of
town. Your objective is to hold long-range protection and
observation of the situation. Intel has several suspects in the
objective with a vehicle parked some 30 yards from the door on side
two. Your position is on the one two side, 450 yards out, with a
good view of the building and side door. Shots ring out and radio
traffic indicates that a perimeter officer is down. Suddenly the
door opens and a suspect moves at a fast walk towards the vehicle,
weapon mounted and shooting randomly. From your sniper training
you know that to hit this suspect you need to know:
TOF time of flight (sec) X SOT speed of target (fps) = Lead in feet (LIF)
Then convert LIF to MILs
Guess
what, by the time you dig your calculator out, convert and crunch
numbers, the target is long gone or dies of old age. If a sniper
doesn’t have the knowledge, training and background in holding on
movers at various ranges and speeds, he is all but lost making a quick
shot. Throw in some angle movement to the equation and your lucky
at best. Shooting movers you also have to know some of the other
common problems. Some of the common errors when engaging moving
targets are not focusing on the cross hairs and a tendency to flinch
buck or jerk. The next greatest problem is not applying proper
windage to the shot. After watching shooters engage movers for
months on end, knowing that they have established a zero with wind,
shooters will have a different hold on a left to right pass as apposed
to a right to left pass.
The shooter also has to know that
there are two techniques to engage moving targets. The first is
the tracking shot. Tracking shots are best used from the sitting,
kneeling or standing positions. Tracking shots are also best when
the target is close and path between the shooter and target are void of
obstacles. Targets moving at high speed are also best engaged
from the tracking mode. Ambush shots are used when the target is
at longer distances and is moving at a steady pace. Using this
technique the shooter have the option of setting the time and place of
the shot.
Be it a real deployment or a match, unless you have
accurate data available to you that you can refer to that dictates lead
and hold at various speeds and distances, everything is a WILD ASS
GUESS.
