Elm Fork Wednesday Night Classes
Next Wednesday's class, on May 28, is now “Carbine Speed and
Accuracy”. This class will throughly work students through
the fundamentals of how to achieve fast and accurate hits, stressing
trigger control, trigger reset, and second sight picture.
Shooting too quickly means missing the target, while shooting
more accurately than the situation requires means that you are taking
too much time.
Beginner to advanced carbine shooters will all take away something from
this class. Bring your carbine, sling, 200 rounds of ammunition,
and safety gear. The cost is $65, runs from 6:30 PM to 9 PM, and
pre-registration is not required, just show up and shoot.
In June there is only going to be one Wednesday night class, with
"Pistol Speed and Accuracy" on June 18. The objectives of this
class are similar to the carbine class, and bring a pistol and pistol
ammunition in place of the carbine.
If you have a topic that you would like to see for a Wednesday night class, drop us a line or give us a call.

LaRue 3-Gun Match - Report
On April 26, shooters decended on Tiger Valley for our LaRue Tactical
3-Gun match. Participants were challenged by eight inventive
courses of fire, utilizing our long range facilities, live-fire
shoot-house, and helicopter mock-up. LaRue coordinated the prize
table with other vendors including DPMS, SpecOps, Springfield, and
Surefire. Over $37,000 of high-end tactical gear was given away
during the course of the event.
Many thanks to Mark LaRue, Greg Coker, the hardworking RO's, scorekeeping, and all of our participants.
For those who missed out, keep an eye on our upcoming competitions and the LaRue 3-gun will return to Tiger Valley next spring!

Reduce your AR-15 Ammunition Expense
There's little
question that spiraling costs of 5.56 ammunition has impacted
many AR-15 training plans. A number of popular options exist
for shooters to continue training by switching to other calibers.
One alternative is to switch
to a platform where reasonably cheap ammunition is still available,
with 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 being popular choices. Changing platforms
unfortunately means switching operations for critical tasks, including
safety manipulation and reloading.
An increasingly popular choice for the AR-15 shooter is utilizing the
.22 Long Rifle cartridge. With 5.56 ammunition going
for about $0.35 per round and .22 Long Rifle still at a reasonable $0.05, the potential cost savings are impressive.
The first of these options involve replacing the AR's bolt carrier
assembly with a conversion kit replacement. Combined with
specialized magazines, these kits push the modestly-priced .22 Long
Rifle bullet down the barrel of your existing rifle though the
bullet-to-barrel fit isn't quite right and accuracy suffers.
The second option are dedicated .22 Long Rifle complete upper receives, such as those sold by Model 1 Sales.
Simply push out two pins and swap the .22 upper onto your existing
lower receiver and off you go. Magazines are available that
duplicate the look and feel of conventional AR magazines. They
are, however, bit fragile and need to be kept from bouncing off the
ground during reloading. Replacing the entire upper can also
involve the additional costs of another set of optics and/or iron sites.
Lower receivers that have heavy trigger springs may find that the
.22 Long Rifle cartridge will not have enough energy to properly cycle
the action and will have to swap out the trigger spring
for a lighter model. Many lower receivers won't require any changes at all.
We've seen a number of these dedicated .22 uppers come through our high
round count carbine classes, all with good results and excellent
reliability. Students can fire the bulk of the CQB distances with
the .22, then swap back to 5.56 for longer range work.
Regardless of your choice, there are certainly solid options out there
to get your carbine skills top-notch and keep them there without
breaking the bank with high ammunition costs.
