"Concealed" Carry Isn't Enough
Texas law states that a "concealed handgun" means a handgun, the presence of which is not openly discernible to the ordinary observation of a reasonable person.

Like it or not, there is a substantial difference between having a firearm legally concealed and keeping your weapon unknown to a potential threat.  Also, many CHL holders make the potentially fatal mistake of underestimating criminal opponents.

Apart from the zombie-headed meth-addict crowd, there is a substantial portion of the criminal population who are professionals and very good at what they do.  Just as in poker, there are "tells" that can give the CHL holder away.  Fanny packs, "CHL" vests (especially worn out of season), and overly-large, untucked shirts worn by a demographic that usually doesn't, are all as effective as a sign stating "I've got a weapon so shoot me first".

A wise man once said that "conflict is based on deception". Telegraphing your weapon to a situationally aware, professional criminal is a surefire way not to survive the encounter.  "Concealed" carry isn't enough.

Equipment Spotlight:  DCLW
Since the time when shooting began, people looked for portable solutions to shoot from a more stable platform.  With field-expedient solutions ranging from a nearby tree to a comrade's shoulder, successful commercial products have been limited to bipods and shooting sticks.

In early 2007, an international special operations center contacted Alamo Four Star, a San Antonio-based manufacturing company, looking for a next-generation system.  The new product needed to completely support a rifle from prone, kneeling, and sitting positions, be lightweight, robust, and easy to operate.

Mark Deros, owner of Alamo Four Star, developed the DCLW - "Deros Compact Light Weight" in response to those needs.  An innovative, fast, tough, and lightweight tripod system, the DCLW allows the weapon a secure firing position across a range of shooting positions.  In a defensive role, the DCLW allows a police marksman a stable and non-fatiguing method of covering a building during a prolonged hostage situation.  On the offense, the easily carried DCLW allows for fast setup and accurate engagement of quickly appearing targets.

The product is available in two versions and features two options.  The DCLW model is the standard unit built onto a short aluminum tripod for prone, sitting and kneeling position.  The DCLWOPTION model is the upper assembly adaptable to any tripod.  The first option is a picatinny rail, for easy attachment of devices such as range finders.  The second option is the pressure side kit, for clamping the firearm between the forearm parallels in the cradle.

The DCLW will be added to Alamo Four Star's website (www.alamofourstar.com) late in September.  The unit is available either directly from Alamo or from Tiger Valley.  To purchase the unit from Tiger Valley, please contact TJ Pilling at (972)977-9512.  For additional pictures, specifications, and pricing, please click here.
